Sleep is essential for maintaining good health, but disrupted sleep may accelerate biological aging. This study examined how sleep quality, measured using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), is linked to epigenetic age acceleration in a cohort of 692 Korean adults. Researchers found that poor sleepers had a significant association between higher PSQI scores and accelerated aging markers, particularly GrimAgeAccel and DunedinPACE, suggesting that inadequate sleep may speed up biological aging at the molecular level.
Sleep, Metabolic Syndrome, and Aging
In addition to aging, poor sleep also increased the risk of metabolic syndrome (MetS). Each one-point increase in PSQI was linked to a 15% higher risk of developing MetS, a condition that includes high blood sugar, hypertension, and abnormal cholesterol levels. Notably, among poor sleepers, worse sleep quality correlated with increased fasting glucose, highlighting the role of sleep in metabolic health. This could indicate that poor sleep may lead to age-related diseases of the metabolic system, such as diabetes; previous work has elucidated the role epigenetic regulation may play in the development of diabetes upon disruption to the circadian rhythm.
But it’s not just about how much sleep you get—it’s also about when you sleep and how consistent your sleep schedule is. Irregular sleep patterns, such as shifting bedtimes or varying sleep durations, have also been linked to accelerated epigenetic aging. Research shows that even in young adults, those with inconsistent sleep schedules age faster at the molecular level. This suggests that maintaining a stable sleep routine—sleeping and waking at the same times each day—may be just as important for long-term health as getting enough hours of rest.
