I studied a BSc in Genetics at the University of Nottingham at undergraduate, where I also studied an MSc in Molecular Genetics and Diagnostics. The latter stages of my time at university was spent during the COVID- 19 pandemic, which transformed Genomics and the handling of disease outbreaks forever.
And one of my favourite topics was epigenomics, which I looked into for my master’s project. Epigenetic modifications can be influenced by external cues such as, environmental pollutants or dietary compounds. My research revealed that the RNA modification induced by co-regulated effector proteins help combat genotoxic stress. If for e.g further research shows that any environmental chemicals interact and affect the transcriptional regulation of these effector proteins, it could lead to the progression of age related diseases such as Alzheimer’s.
GeneNature is about epigenetics and so we suggest nurturing the health of our Genetics by preventing the vast amount of environmental damage to our genes.
